About this class

Written by Sheikh al Islām Abū Ismāʿīl al Harawi al Ḥanbali (d.481h), Manāzil al Sāʾirīn is a classical text written in a very terse manner making it ideal as a textbook for studying spiritual wayfaring. The text's 100 spiritual stations was famously explained by Ibn al Qayyim (rḥ) in his magnum opus, Madārij al Sālikīn.

  • Who is this course for?

    This course is suitable for anyone who has an interest in Islamic spirituality/wayfaring (sulūk). ​The text is in Arabic and will be translated live in class. Knowledge of the Arabic language is not essential. This text is ideal for those who have studied Mukhtaṣar Minhāj al Qāṣidīn with us as well as the selected readings from Madārij al Sālikīn.

  • How are the classes delivered?

    The classes are delivered live via Zoom using high quality audio and visuals. The classes are interactive allowing students to ask questions via both audio and the chat box. Moreover, the class will have a dedicated Telegram channel allowing students to engage with the teacher throughout the duration of the course. The class will be delivered in English.

  • How long is the course for?

    This is an open-ended class with no fixed date for completion. Nonetheless, it is expected it will take 1-2 years to complete the entire study of the book.

  • Is live attendance mandatory?

    No, although it highly encouraged. If a student misses a class they can view the recording for the lesson on the student portal. Please note, each recording will remain on the student portal for 2 weeks only. We do not provide lifetime access to our classes as we expect students to view the classes on a regular basis and complete the course within the term time.

Alomgir Ali

Alomgir Ali is a graduate of Islamic Law (BA) from the University of al Azhar al Sharif (Cairo, Egypt) and also holds a BA in Arabic and English Language. He possesses a number of Ijāzahs (licenses) including for the Qur'ān and has authored and translated a number of books including "Meadows of the Divine: 40 Ḥadīth on the Virtues and Rulings of the Qur'ān" published by Fig Tree Publications. He has been teaching Arabic and Islamic disciplines for nearly 20 years in various educational institutions and has worked as an Imām in London and has delivered sermons and lectures in the UK and Europe. He set up Tawfiq Online Learning, an online learning platform in 2019, where he currently teaches .

Saying a particular Islamic class is ‘life changing’ is such an oft repeated phrase that it has become a cliche. This class won’t change your life. Rather it will cause an earthquake in your soul so that mundane zombie-mode actions become a source of distress because of the wasted opportunity. Instead, you will want to have a noble intention for housekeeping, gardening, DIY and other rudimentary tasks. In addition, this class will, by the permission of Allah, cause you to realise that the purpose of life, the highest purpose of your salat, your sadaqah, your struggle is to gain the affection of your Creator. In doing so you will come to realise that every calamity which shatters your heart into a thousand pieces should be a cause for celebration because that ostensible catastrophe is in reality an act of love from your Nurturer who only wants to draw you into His warm embrace.

The Manazil as Saireen class is on another level. It goes so much deeper into topics such as tawakkul, tafweedh etc and can aid the student immensely in achieving nearness to Allah. It teaches one how to think correctly, thereby eliminating many of the anxieties and stresses one would encounter when facing life's challenges without gaining and implementing such knowledge.

If there is anything that can be said about this class, it is that it helps us realise that Allah can be sought in everything we do, and that even in the pits of pain and sadness we find our solace in Him. Nothing we do is truly "useless" so long as our intention is purely for Him. We have learned that Allah wishes for us to seek Him in all of our matters, not just in those that He has obligated upon us. The lessons have also, by His Grace, opened my eyes to depth and breadth of my shortcomings, and have shown the way to returning to Allah in the manner that most pleases Him. May Allah bless Sh. Alomgir for dedicating his time to teaching a topic which we were clueless of our desperate need of it.
